Russian volunteers are raising 8 million rubles ($98,000) to create a sperm cryobank for soldiers fighting in Ukraine.

The project, called “Voin,” would allow servicemen to freeze their reproductive material before deployment. With their prior consent, their partners could later use it for artificial insemination or IVF.

The organizers describe the idea in unusually direct terms: modern reproductive technology, they say, could create a program for “replenishing losses under conditions of military action.”

The future needs a backup.
