    Cat Caught Smuggling Drugs Into Russian Prison

    Prison staff in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region intercepted an unusual suspected drug courier: a cat wearing a homemade collar containing two packages.

    One package held a green substance, while the other contained white powder. Staff called in a dog handler and a sniffer dog named Foxy, which detected the scent of narcotics. Laboratory testing later confirmed that the packages contained illegal drugs.

    The collar was confiscated, but after being examined, the cat was released without charge.

    Remarkably, a similar smuggling attempt involving another cat was stopped at a prison in the same region around a year earlier.

    The courier walked free. The collar did not.

    Norwegian Reindeer Cross Into Russia Through Hole in Border Fence

    Around 30 Norwegian reindeer reportedly crossed into Russia through a damaged section of the border fence near the village of Nikel in Murmansk Oblast.

    The animals’ owners have been unable to retrieve them because they cannot obtain Russian visas amid strained relations between the two countries. Reindeer owner Egil Kalliainen says the herd is now effectively considered lost and has urged authorities to repair the fence.

    This is not the first time Norwegian reindeer have wandered across the border. A previous incident reportedly cost Norway 47 million kroner, approximately $4.5 million, in compensation for damage caused inside Russia.

    For now, Santa’s workforce appears to have changed countries without completing the paperwork.

    Rostov Restaurant Starts Serving Octopus Shawarma

    A restaurant in Rostov-on-Don has introduced an unusual version of the popular street food: shawarma made with octopus.

    Instead of the traditional chicken or beef, whole octopuses are slowly roasted on a vertical spit, sliced, and served inside flatbread with sauce and vegetables.

    The dish reportedly costs 590 rubles, approximately $7.50.

    Mercedes and Zalotoy Among Moscow Region’s Most Unusual Baby Names

    Mercedes and Zalotoy were among the most unusual names given to newborn babies in Moscow Oblast this year, according to regional authorities.

    Mercedes appeared among the rarer names chosen for girls, while Zalotoy was listed among unusual boys’ names. The spelling Zalotoy is especially distinctive: it differs from the standard Russian word zolotoy, meaning “golden.”

    Other uncommon names registered for boys included Eusebius, Nikodim, Spiridon, and Hector. Unusual names given to girls included Alexandrita, Bereginya, and Naomi.

    An unusually intense form of massage nicknamed “BDSM massage” is reportedly attracting long waiting lists in Dagestan.

    Clients are said to wait months for appointments with practitioners whose forceful manual techniques can leave the back painful and covered in bruises. A 40-minute session reportedly costs between 2,000 and 6,000 rubles, approximately $25–$77.

    Critics argue that a proper massage should not leave clients injured.     Russian Region Offers Prisoners $5,100 to Sign Military Contracts

    Prisoners in Russia’s Rostov Oblast will be eligible for a one-time payment of 400,000 rubles, approximately $5,100, for signing a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense and joining Russia’s war in Ukraine.

    Under the regional measure, the payment will be available to prisoners who sign military contracts in Rostov Oblast between July 20 and December 31, 2026. Russian media describe Rostov as the first region to introduce this specific regional incentive for people serving prison sentences.
